Pointers on How to Select Guitar Strings | How to read guitar tabs

Guitar strings are an often overlooked element in recording guitars. Many think that it doesn't matter what type of strings their guitar holds as long as they can play. However, how to select guitar strings is a very crucial step in the recording process.

The strings, more so than any amp or effect, defines your guitar's tone. Putting on improper strings can also inadvertently damage your guitar. It's also important to note that choosing guitar strings depends on your level of expertise or desired ease of playing, the type of guitar you will play, and the sound you are going for.

There are many different kinds of guitar strings. For beginners and the unacquainted who are looking for the right strings for acoustic or electric, here are our pointers on how to select guitar strings...

Acoustic Guitar:

There is a wide array of strings for acoustic guitars, more so than for electric; how to select guitar strings for your acoustic?

For you beginners, choose nylon strings, which are easy on your fingers. They also produce a soft tone, which is great if you're going for a classical guitar sound. If you are a singer-songwriter or want to play pop or folk guitar, go with ball-end nylon strings, which are a bit heavier than regular nylon and thus better for hard strumming. Bronze strings are also great for pop/folk/singer-songwriter guitars, with light gauge better suited for fingerpicking and heavy gauge for strumming.

If you need a louder and sharper sound than what nylon can deliver, pick Monel strings. Beginners, choose medium-light gauge, which again are easy on your fingers. Otherwise, go with a thicker gauge for a stronger sound. Brass strings will also generate a sharp tone. If metal strings are too much for your fingers or you want something that's even better for finger-style playing, then switch to silk or steel (just make sure not to use metal or steel strings on a classical guitar, as the high tension can damage it by warping the neck). Flat-polished strings are also easier on your fingers, which could be a great choice if you're a beginner.

Hey, what about electric guitar strings? What type of strings are best for electric guitars? Visit our site to find out pointers on how to select guitar strings for electric guitar and to read other great guitar recording tips.

About Tuning | learn how to read guitars tabs

learn how to read guitars tabs

The first thing you should whenever you pick up the guitar to play or practice is get it in tune. The sound of an out of tune guitar ranks up there with the sound of fingernails scratching on a chalkboard. It can be very discouraging to play an out of tune guitar, because nothing you play will sound right. In fact some beginners quit playing at all because of this very reason.

Tuning your guitar is something you get better at with practice. It takes time to develop your ears to the point that you are able to fine-tune your instrument. Once you have developed your "hearing power" you may hear subtle differences in pitch that you haven't heard before.

Always tune up. This means that you increase the tension of the string until it reaches the desired tone. If you go too far loosen the string tension and tune up again. This is much more accurate than tuning down and increases the chances of the string staying in tune.

To tune your guitar you'll need a reference pitch from another guitar, a piano, a tuning fork, or an electronic tuner. You can get a decent tuner at any music store for under $20. I suggest you get one if you don't already have one.

Standard Tuning

In standard tuning your strings will be tuned to the following notes low-to-high: E A D G B E. There are other tunings, but don't bother messing with them unless you know what you are doing. Over 95% of all guitar music is in standard tuning or a dropped down version of it. Some guitar players tune all the strings down one half step.

Use the audio clips to get your guitar in tune to standard tuning. Match the pitch of each string as closely as you can. It's all right if it takes you awhile. You'll get better with practice. One you have tuned all six strings, go back and check them again. Sometimes you'll have to make some minor adjustments. Remember to tune up to the correct pitch and not down

Buying an acoustic guitar and the importance of the neck angle (How To Read Guitar Tabs)

(How To Read Guitar Tabs)

How well a guitar plays is determined by the action. The action on a guitar is the distance between the underside of the strings and the frets. The frets are the thin metal strips that lie across the neck. The maximum distance is found in the area where the neck and body join. If the distance is greater than say 3mm then it will be harder to play the guitar up the neck than it should be and for a beginner it can totally discouraging. Keep in mind that that a small difference can mean a lot.
A 4mm gap is a big step up from 3mm.

There are four things that influence the action.
1. The Saddle Height
2. The Nut Height
3. The Truss Rod Adjustment
4. The Neck Angle

The first three can be adjusted. If the neck angle is bad then adjusting the other three will bring about little change to the action. Picture a guitar lying level on its back and you place a straight edge along neck and extending down to touch the bridge. The bridge is the piece of timber attached to the body of the guitar that has the strings attached to it, and the saddle is the (usually) white plastic strip that sits in the bridge and has the strings running across it. When the neck angle is good then the neck and the top of the bridge will be on the same line. When the angle is bad then the straight edge will point to a spot closer to where the bridge joins the body and is a really bad case it would touch the body of the guitar first.

Now we cannot carry out this test in a music store, however what we can do is sight down the neck and it’s fairly easy to see where the line of the neck points to, it should be in line with the top of the bridge.

This is all probably a lot to absorb in one go, the important thing is to be aware of the action and any good guitar salesperson should know all this and be able to point them out to you so you can make the best choice so you have a guitar that is easy to play.

Lastly do not buy a guitar because you like the color of it , buy the guitar that sounds good and plays well.

Quadruple-Neck monster requires true guitar hero to play it

Quadruple-Neck monster

This has got to be a first. The Quadruple-Neck Guitar has now exploded on the scene, but the problem now is, who the heck will be able to do it justice? Contrary to the fake, musical-talent-free Guitar Hero paradigm, this ax requires quadruple skill, demanding that you have proficiency in the intricacies of playing a bluegrass band full of real instruments, including a guitar, bass, mandolin and banjo all in one.

One of these beasts was sold on eBay earlier this month for $255, an unusually low price even when combined with its huge $134.98 shipping tariff. Just the novelty value of hoisting one of these mothers onstage would be worth that much. Heck, just re-stringing the thing will cost you a fortune. Outrageous. If you can really play this baby — and I mean all of it — you’re my hero.

Martin D-28 guitar, known as The Bon Aqua -how to read guitar tabs

how to read guitar tabs

This 1971 Martin D-28 guitar, known as The Bon Aqua, was kept at Johnny Cash’s 100-acre farm near Bon Aqua, Tennessee, 35 miles southwest of Nashville. Returning from extensive tours in the U.S. and abroad, Johnny would go there alone, as he wrote in his autobiography, “to cook my own food, read my own books, tend my own garden, water my own land, and think, write, compose, rest, and reflect in peace.” As such, the guitar, which Johnny used while writing songs during the last 30 years of his life, was more intimately connected with him than the hundreds of other guitars that came and went through his hands on the road.

While you're learning how to play the guitar, let's be honest about something. Deep inside, you're hoping you can play those fantastic sounding guitar licks and riffs.(how to read guitar tabs)Blues, rock even country style guitar playing is always better when you include guitar licks. But how do you go about learning to play those really fast rock guitar licks and riffs?
Here are a few tips.(how to read guitar tabs)

1. You Need To Know Your Musical Scales

(how to read guitar tabs)Sure, it sounds tedious, however all good musicians have to put in that hard work behind the scenes when they practice those difficult moves. It matters not whether you're playing the piano in a band or playing wailing rock guitar licks, learning an instrument involves some repetition. (how to read guitar tabs)Becoming good with scales, keys, and even some note reading will make your guitar playing sizzle. So learn everything you can about music.

2. How Do You Eat An Elephant? One Bite At A Time

(how to read guitar tabs)This principle goes by other names, such as "baby steps" or "little by little". If you will commit to practicing the scales and tabs of your favorite piece of music even just for a quarter of an hour a day, those fast licks and riffs will improve before you know it. (how to read guitar tabs)Perseverance is the key. No one ever accomplished anything they gave up on.

3. Get Some Help

(how to read guitar tabs) A mentor can be a real help for learning to play fast rock or slide guitar licks. The downside to a live teacher is that private lessons can get costly. In addition, the teacher may not want to answer your questions when you are hammering out your technique at 3:00 a.m.! (how to read guitar tabs) There's a great solution to these dilemmas, though. Get your guitar instruction via your computer, either through downloadable guitar instruction software or websites that relate to playing the guitar. (how to read guitar tabs)

4. Download Guitar Software To Your Computer

When learning fast rock guitar licks, guitar learning software provides several advantages. First off, you can see the lick, both as written music and as the more down to earth tabulature form. But the best part is that you can hear the lick, too. (how to read guitar tabs) Look for software that has infinite looping so that you can listen to it several times before you jump in and play along with it. (how to read guitar tabs) If the recording doesn't loop , you're sure to get frustrated because you'll just be getting ready to play when you'll have to click your mouse again. (how to read guitar tabs) Perhaps most important of all is being able to vary the speed of the recording so you can learn the guitar licks slowly and then increase your speed until your playing like a guitar god!

Easy Guitar Tabs (how to read guitar tabs)

how to read guitar tabs
by sas_ricky

how to read guitar tabs:Guitar tabs are an easy solution for you if you have no idea of how to read sheet music but are constantly bugged by the notion that you want to be a guitarist. Guitar tabs are easy to learn and allow you to begin playing songs right away, even if you are not familiar with them. Once you have bought your first guitar, it is time to begin looking for easy guitar tab versions of some songs to find out what it feels like to be a guitar player. Which songs you need tabs for depends on how you see yourself as a musician.

how to read guitar tabs:Do you want to play your favorite songs chiefly for your own amusement or do you want to aim your repertoire at a potential audience? Let us look at your audience for a minute. The most popular songs in the world are all from years gone by. If you sit a bunch of people aged between ten and fifty down and play songs at them you will find some universal favorites, and they will all be old songs. If you want to please a random audience, your ultimate goal should be to have about one hundred popular songs ranging from the 1940's to the present, but you could probably narrow the range to just include songs going back to the sixties.

how to read guitar tabs: So what are the easiest songs to learn from tabs? What can a beginner guitarist learn quickly without too much trouble? Well, I did a little searching on the internet concerning that question, and I found that "Horse With No Name" contains only two chords, and dead simple ones at that! You could be playing that song in a convincing fashion today! "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" makes use of the chords G D C and Am - all easy chords. Building on chords you have acquired learning these songs, you can go onto "House Of The Rising Sun" which uses Am C D F E and E7. Once you have learnt that, it's only natural to go onto another beautiful song, "California Dreamin'" which has the same chords. If you do not like the idea of beginning your guitar playing with these songs, do an internet search in the country music and blues genres. Actually a working knowledge of twelve bar blues is very useful for a guitar player just starting out.

Learn to Play Guitar Fast ( how to read guitar tabs)

O for Observation

Human beings work best when all of the senses work in unison. Try plugging your ears with cotton wool and then trying to play a song. Not very good are you. (People like Ray Charles and Beethoven amaze me).

Your senses of sight, sound and touch all interweave to play guitar. When you play a song really well, you can even taste the applause (just kidding). The more you play, the more your fingers put themselves in the right places, your muscles retain a memory of those positions. You begin to see patterns and relationships on the fretboard. You hear yourself play the correct notes and chords and that gives you confidence, which is essential in fast playing.

Memorization is the foundation for observation, and observation is the key to training your mind and hands to work in concert automatically.

S for strength and T for training

This is not weight training! It is really dexterity training (but MODT isn't a word!). However, being dextrous means you have strength in your fingers in order to play the chords you need to play when you need to play them.

Beginners often struggle to hold down chords and play scales with all four fingers. Consistent and correct practice is the only way to build strength, muscle memory and finger dexterity.

The same problem occurs for intermediate players - the most likely culprit for slow play is a deficiency in strength, dexterity and/or correct technique.

Practise your finger exercise and chord making perfectly - don't settle for "that'll do" or "near enough". You want to train your fingers to go to the correct place in the correct way every time! Sloppy exercises will not help.

In conclusion, the key to learning guitar faster - as well as playing it faster - rests in following the M.O.S.T. formula. It really is all about getting the basics right from the start!

Learn to Play Guitar Fast ( how to read guitar tabs)

There is a useful acronym that you can use to help focus your practice and improve your playing: M.O.S.T.

M for Memorization

You can have the world's best "ear", but if you don't memorise:

a) the fretboard notes and
b) the major and minor key chords and scales,

it won't matter how good your ear is. The most frustrating thing about learning a new song is finding that chord or note that you know you've learned but just can't remember! It's funny that song writers don't give you time in the middle of their pieces to find that Aminor chord, or work out if a Db minor chord works in a song in B, and then if it does, where it is on the fretboard!

If you are a beginner - LEARN THE FRETBOARD and memorise it!

If you are more advanced - LEARN THE FRETBOARD and memorise it! You might think you already know it, but can you jump from one note or chord to any other instantly without thinking about it?

Learn to Play Guitar Fast ( how to read guitar tabs)

So, you’ve bought a new guitar! If you are like I was, you’ve been going to barbeques for years, having a couple of beers and watching your mates sitting around with their guitars, playing songs you’ve known for years and would love to play! So you finally spent the money and bought a guitar – now what?

You want to learn fast – so you can join in. For this article, I’m going to assume that you’re a beginner who wants basic proficiency.

I’ve done some research on this, as it was where I was, and I found a connection between people who want to “play fast” and those who already play but just want to play "faster". The connection is quite simple, yet very profound.

Through what I found out, I believe there are two parallels:

1. Study the techniques involved which will make your overall playing faster, and

2. Re-focus your practice sessions onto the basic concepts that beginners learn, which will allow you to become a faster player.
