If you need a louder and sharper sound than what nylon can deliver, pick Monel strings. Beginners, choose medium-light gauge, which again are easy on your fingers. Otherwise, go with a thicker gauge for a stronger sound. Brass strings will also generate a sharp tone. If metal strings are too much for your fingers or you want something that's even better for finger-style playing, then switch to silk or steel (just make sure not to use metal or steel strings on a classical guitar, as the high tension can damage it by warping the neck). Flat-polished strings are also easier on your fingers, which could be a great choice if you're a beginner.

To tune your guitar you'll need a reference pitch from another guitar, a piano, a tuning fork, or an electronic tuner. You can get a decent tuner at any music store for under $20. I suggest you get one if you don't already have one.

Standard Tuning

In standard tuning your strings will be tuned to the following notes low-to-high: E A D G B E. There are other tunings, but don't bother messing with them unless you know what you are doing. Over 95% of all guitar music is in standard tuning or a dropped down version of it. Some guitar players tune all the strings down one half step.

Use the audio clips to get your guitar in tune to standard tuning. Match the pitch of each string as closely as you can. It's all right if it takes you awhile. You'll get better with practice. How well a guitar plays is determined by the action.The action on a guitar is the distance between the underside of the strings and the frets. The frets are the thin metal strips that lie across the neck. The maximum distance is found in the area where the neck and body join. If the distance is greater than say 3mm then it will be harder to play the guitar up the neck than it should be and for a beginner it can totally discouraging. Keep in mind that that a small difference can mean a lot.
A 4mm gap is a big step up from 3mm.

There are four things that influence the action.
1. The Saddle Height
2. The Nut Height
3. The Truss Rod Adjustment
4. The Neck Angle

The first three can be adjusted. If the neck angle is bad then adjusting the other three will bring about little change to the action. Picture a guitar lying level on its back and you place a straight edge along neck and extending down to touch the bridge. The bridge is the piece of timber attached to the body of the guitar that has the strings attached to it, and the saddle is the (usually) white plastic strip that sits in the bridge and has the strings running across it. When the neck angle is good then the neck and the top of the bridge will be on the same line. When the angle is bad then the straight edge will point to a spot closer to where the bridge joins the body and is a really bad case it would touch the body of the guitar first.

Now we cannot carry out this test in a music store, however what we can do is sight down the neck and it’s fairly easy to see where the line of the neck points to, it should be in line with the top of the bridge.

This is all probably a lot to absorb in one go, the important thing is to be aware of the action and any good guitar salesperson should know all this and be able to point them out to you so you can make the best choice so you have a guitar that is easy to play.

Lastly do not buy a guitar because you like the color of it , buy the guitar that sounds good and plays well.

Beginners often struggle to hold down chords and play scales with all four fingers. Consistent and correct practice is the only way to build strength, muscle memory and finger dexterity.

Why the low E string? Because as you can see, the "0" is in the same row as the low E string.

The next number you read is a 7. You should read that as telling you to fret the 7th fret on the guitar. This means to press the A string down 7 frets from the head stock of the guitar. The headstock of the guitar is the part that has the tuning keys, the bean shaped metal pieces that you use to turn your guitar.

Then the next number is a 5. Can you guess what string to press the fret down? It is the D string, and you should read that as telling you to press the 5ft fret from the head stock.

That is it! That is what a basic tab looks like. There are more advanced techniques that I hope to get to later, but this should give you enough info to know how to read some basic guitar tabs. Now you still might not understand how to read complicated guitar tabs.

Complicated tabs are tough for anyone. One issue with guitar tabs is that it is difficult to learn is how to play rhythm, or the pace of the songs that you are trying to learn how to play and read.

One book that I have found useful in learning how to play the rhythm of guitar tabs "The Beginner's Guide To Unlocking The Guitar." It will teach you not only learning how to read tabs, but also how to play full songs, solo, how to learn correct posture, how to jump start your music career, and how to play difficult songs, all in one weekend, no joke! We will start this turnaround with the plain and easy A minor chord. It looks like this with guitar tab:

If you release the finger pressure a bit and slide the chord up two frets you will get the following chord:

0/5 4/4 4/3 3/2 0/1

A nice sounding chord that can be named in different ways. We can call it B minor with A as bass note and an added E note. Abbreviated it will be Bm/A add 11.

By sliding the chord up one more fret and changing just one note (by pressing down your little finger) you will get the following guitar chord:

0/5 5/4 5/3 5/2 0/1

This will be an A minor seven chord. The short notation is Am7.

Played in the following order the chords will create a turnaround:

A turnaround in the key of A

What is a turnaround? It is a set of chords that can be played over and over again on your guitar as an intro to a song or between verses and so on.

We will start with an ordinary A major chord that with the guitar tab notation previously explained will look like this:

We will omit the sixth string to get a cleaner sound. Let's add an E chord. We will not use the ordinary E major och E7 chord. Instead we will use an easier chord that is called E major with A as bass note notated E/A.

The guitar chord looks like this:

We will finally add an Asus chord. The guitar tab notation looks as follows:

0/5 2/4 2/3 3/2 0/1

You can play the chords in the following manner:

The series of horizontal lines forms what is called a staff or stave. Each line represents a string, and the standard acoustic guitar tab has a six-line staff. Numbers are written on the lines. Guitar music has a musical notation all its own. Rather than the standard musical notation that other musicians use, guitar players use a more simple and operational type of musical notation, called a tab. The great thing about using acoustic guitar tabs is that you can learn to play guitar without having to learn to read music in the traditional sense. Tabs, or tablatures, are used for many stringed instruments. In this article we keep looking at how to read guitar 2 as we previously discussed in Part 1.

Let's take the example of a tab for a group of notes; in this example we will start with the "E", the lowest string and we will go all the way through to "G", the highest one.

The example above shows us that a very quick way to learn how to play acoustic guitar fast. The only downside is that by only reading tabs, you do not learn the note durations. Tabs are not supposed to replace musical sheets but are just indicators as to where and how to play a chord on the guitar.

Should you want to learn a song using tabs, here is what you should do:

First, pick one of your favorite songs and get a feel of how it should be put on paper. Once you have done that you can try to replicate the song using the music language, which is the tab code.

The second important thing is to use written music that has the tab right under the music sheet. That way, not only can you read the music from the sheet but you can also see the position on the guitar with the tab.

A burning desire to play the guitar is very strong in some individuals, regardless of age or background. One reason for this is that with just a little bit of practice, you can use guitar tabs to play many of your favorite songs. The only thing that stands in the way between you and the song that you want to play is learning how to read guitar tabs. It is actually a lot simpler than what you may have thought.

Guitar tabs are available on the Internet on thousands of different websites (some for free, some not). Regardless of where you get your tabs from, most of them follow the same basic procedure. The strings are shown as horizontal lines with the uppermost line being the first, or lower string on your guitar. The vertical lines are the fret bars that are on the guitar and typically, the uppermost fret is numbered so that you know where to begin.

The other part of learning how to read guitar tabs is finger placement. This is actually made very simple as well whenever you're looking at these charts because the finger placements are shown directly on the strings, nearest and right above the same corresponding fret bar on the guitar. You simply place your fingers as they are arranged on the guitar tab and then strum the strings that are to be strum. Any strings that are to be skipped whenever you are playing this particular tab will be marked with the letter x.
